Recognizing The Support

As I continue to pay off more and more financial debt from my past along with deepening the conscious feelings of self-love, my vision for recognizing support gets clearer.  And perhaps more clearly stated; as I continue to allow Universal Energy Flow to come into my life by opening the channels of receiving through deeper self-love, the more I recognize the support of Universal Energy Flow in my life.  That might sound like a circular statement, and indeed the reality of it is circular.

The physical debt is simply a bookmark to remind me where I've left off in my growth and development in recognition of who and what I am as Love.  When the financial debt has been completed, there will be other bookmarks and milestones in my evolution or devolution (depending on your perspective) back to embodied recognition of Truth.

The "mirror principle" (everything that shows up in my life as mirror of where I'm at within myself) is getting easier to work with.  Or rather, my resistance to seeing it is less.  Even when my resistance to looking in the mirror of my life circumstances feels like it's peaking, the memories of positively stretching past my comfort zone and getting the lessons continue to build a force within me that is more and more palpable, more available to me, day by day.

Today, the mirror is showing me that in my case it's all about support.  Where do I feel unsupported?  These are the places where I get to practice opening, trusting, and letting go of expectations around what my ego has made up that support should look like.  How the heck can my ego possibly know what support looks like?  Why would I look to it's notions, or past negative emotions, to let me know what support should look like in the present moment?  It can't know.  The ego is a perpetuated sense of separateness; it's a verb.  It's the activity of perpetuating a felt sense of separation.  If I'm letting my ego guide me to safety, I'm screwed.  By definition, it's always going to attempt to steer me towards the feeling of separation.  Feelings of Universal support aren't part of its benefits package.

It's funny to me sitting here writing this.  Humorous because I still see the tendency to look to my circumstances, including how my ego is interpreting the support (or lack thereof) from people in my life based on how it sees their actions.  Yet the ego is always looking through glasses colored by the lenses of separation.  It's reflexive; it keeps turning back on itself.  Maybe this is what the Buddhists are referring to when teaching about the "wheel of Samsara (suffering)".  This endless hamster wheel of actions that perpetuate the same negative feelings, and which would try to convince me that since I'm still running that I must be getting somewhere.  AND, if I run faster and harder that I'll get further.  Further where?  Around the same infinite wheel of same shit different day.  Ha ha ha!

This is where it gets subtle for me, the keyhole into freeing Awareness, that is.  Learning over time to work with my own Attention and rooting it deeper into a place of clear seeing, clear knowing, and clear hearing.  Again and again, this brings me back to the teaching of the sages from the Yoga Vasistha, "The world is as you see it."

Learning to see with increased clarity arises from practices that shift the seeing from the eyes of separation to the Eye of Wholeness.  This might be starting to sound difficult to grasp, or maybe even confusing.  It's not.  If it sounds confusing, you may be listening through the ego.  If it sounds clear, you've likely meditated today, or engaged with a meditation-like practice that connects you to pure Awareness (the felt sense of Wholeness that ultimately recognizes no separation between myself and anything "else").

The most formidable act of self-support I can give myself on a daily basis is to meditate, to allow my attention to turn within to the Source of support; that which supports all of life, which animates all of life.  From there, my actions, thoughts, and feelings become active demonstrations in my life of BEING SUPPORTED.  It only follows that the mirror of my life will reveal supportive people coming closer revealing supportive circumstances.

Now here's the irony ~ even without being aware of this Net of Support, I've been supported by it all along.  In having experiences of "feeling" unsupported by people or events in my past, I was and am, SUPPORTED through the negative experiences to want, look for, and take action towards experiencing a more supported life.  So even the "negative" has been a form of active support in my life to teach me and lead me to the Truth about Love:  Love is the Source of everything.  It is always Here and Now.  I am that Love, and so are You.  When I actively live in this Awareness, life, people, and circumstances will look and feel supportive.

"The world is as you see it." ~ Yoga Vasistha

(Huff Post) Harvesting Confidence

Why does confidence seem so easy for some and yet so completely elusive for others?

Are the people we see as confident truly standing deep and firm in their own boots?

How do the seeds of confidence get planted, nurtured, and radically expanded?

First off, let’s dispel the tidy illusion that so many of the people you see walking tall are actually steeped in deep abiding confidence.  A majority of what you think you see are the images people are projecting and wanting for you to see.  These visions are largely smoke and mirrors.  What passes for confidence on the street is usually some form of arrogance, otherwise known as insecurity dressed up in its Sunday clothes.

In the moments when you yourself are not confident, you can be easily fooled by imagery.   Your own insecurity will be the lens through which you view life and people.  If this is your case, you may not fully recognize the distortion until you experience points of view free from this energy-draining filter.

Abiding confidence arises through the visceral knowledge of who and what you are.  Achievements and honors from the external world only build long-term confidence when they stimulate this inner recognition of your true nature.

If you don’t regularly taste this well-spring of confidence, you’re likely to be missing discipline around some form of meditative practice that actually reveals this true nature to you on a consistent basis.  Consistency is the key.

One of the best practices I know of for getting a meal of Truth is meditation.  Some form of daily (ideally twice daily) meditation.  The most transformative forms of meditation I’ve come across are ones that encourage letting go of control and release the meditator from the rollercoaster ride of thoughts.

For this reason, I’m a big fan of active breathwork.  It so quickly engages the sympathetic nervous system and alkalizes the body that the thinking mind lets go, relaxation runs deep, and the heart opens.  Imprinting the mind and body to trust this opening is the biggest part of my work in revealing Truth within.

Without this constant contact, you’re lost.  All that’s left is to negotiate and barter with the external world for temporary energy spikes, brief moments of respite through food, sex, shopping, drugs, alcohol, caffeine, and other stimulants.

If happiness and confidence are dependent on another person, place, or object, they’re not yet abiding.  They’re temporary, and like all temporary things, can instantly be taken away along with your sense of self.  What follows is some form of drop in energy that will likely have the hallmarks of depression.

The challenge in all of this is in cultivating enough belief in what’s possible to take actions, and take them consistently enough to have experiences of growth in confidence.  Which comes back to practices that bring what’s possible right into the foreground of your direct experience.

There are plenty of people working to grow confidence.  So why isn’t the work proliferating?  One reason is gossip.

Gossip is an investment in other people’s energy and opinions at the expense of your own rooted sense of Self.  And it can also appear as listening to and believing those niggling thoughts in your own mind about yourself or another.

Gossip is like kudzu in the South.  It will spread and spread and choke out anything not like it self, sucking up the water and nutrients for miles and miles.

If you listen to gossip and engage with it (internally or conversationally), your confidence can only go so deep, your sense of Truth will be distorted, and your capacity for intimacy nowhere near what it could be.  This is simply because gossip creates separation between people, and when you sow separation, you yourself experience separation.

A Course In Miracles states that “All minds are joined,” so what you do to one you do to All.

My friend and mentor David Elliott spreads a well-known magnifying glass in other words, “How you do anything is how you do everything.”

Gossip is rooted in a hidden fear of intimacy, a fear of repeating past hurts.  The irony is that gossip sows the seeds deeply for future suffering.

Every seed must bear its fruit.  Which ones will you plant and nurture?

(HuffPost) Finding Ground in Mid Change

How many of you remember that old commercial in the late 70’s/early 80’s:

“How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie-roll pop?”

If I had a dollar for every time my mind had that kind of thought around my growth process, I’d be sitting on some huge cash reserves!  I don’t know about you, but for me, and most of the clients I’ve worked with, future growth can’t be calculated or measured like that.  Usually when my mind is asking for something like that, it’s really looking for some kind of certainty, some sense of solid ground on which to feel safe.

Recently I’ve been looking and feeling deeper than ever into some of the core layers of ego inside of me; layers that can actively distort my thoughts and emotions about nearly anything if I’m not vigilant.   These are the layers of what some spiritual teachers call “inner division” – they create a feeling of being separate from the sense of well-being most people would say that strive to get to.  They create a feeling of being separated from love essentially.  Getting more specific, I’d call it self-love.

This afternoon while I was speaking with my friend and mentor, David Elliott, about his new book “Healing”, I was talking about my experience of working with the first exercise in the book – “Write down all the ways you love yourself.”

I told David that generally my list starts with activities, things I’ve done to or for myself that would seem loving.  Yet my real sense of self-love is that it’s not based in actions, but is most definitely reflected in actions.  If I do not love myself while taking a shower, it’s just a mechanical act.  If I consciously actively love myself while showering, it’s a whole other experience that leaves me feeling expansive, refreshed, and full of joy.

It’s a feeling that I’m learning to cultivate and sense regardless of what I’m doing, or what’s happening around me.  If my love for me is dependent on any particular set of circumstances, my love will be absent without those situations.  If my willingness to move into flow and expansion is tied to what can be given to me, it can just as easily be taken away.

So far this might be sounding a little hard to wrap your head around and turn into practices that’ll abundantly reveal self-love.

For me some form of meditative practice is essential for revealing and experiencing the feeling of this love.  At the moment, it’s a daily practice of sitting two times a day, once in the morning and once later in the day for a minimum of about 23 minutes.  23 minutes hasn’t got any special significance that I know of, it just happens to be the length of the CD track I’m using for meditation.  Several times a week, I also practice the breathwork that I teach.  Both of these constitute meditation practices that quiet my mind and open me to experiencing profound expansion, relaxation, and moments of no thoughts of any kind.  There’s a palpable “Presence” that moves through my body like a buzz or humming feeling, the sense of feeling spaciousness in my cells, and an ease in my breath.

It’s also crucial for me to get some form of exercise daily.  I need a combination of working with weights (which help me feel strong, grounded, and solid in my body) and cardio (which also gets my breath moving deeply and into a rhythm – excellent on the days I haven’t practiced the breathwork).

Then throughout the day, when any thought arises that carries or stimulates some form of tension or negative emotion, I’ve learned to question the truth of the thought.  The best-selling author Byron Katie teaches that any thought that creates suffering indicates an argument with reality and a belief in something that isn’t true.  The way to release the stuck emotion is to show myself the truth by asking myself good questions.

One of my favorite questions is “Can I know this is the absolute Truth for certain?”

And finally, keeping all the spaces I occupy clean.  That goes all the way from physically cleaning and organizing my home, office, and car to maintaining the ecology of my relationships.  I have a practice of regularly scrolling through the contacts in my iPhone and noticing my thoughts and body sensations.  If my stomach clenches when I look at a name, I know I’ve got some work to do.  And doing this work always gives me more space to breathe.  It may mean questioning my beliefs or thoughts about the person, or it may mean picking up the phone and finding out if there’s an amends I need to make.

All these practices are scalable, meaning they’re to be experimented with, tried out over time, and adapted to the situations.  By no means is this the end of the road on practices either.  Essentially I look for practices to cover the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual…all of me.

I also check in to make sure I’m having some fun.  This is a muscle I know I need to keep focused on building.  If I’m not careful I can start to get a little too serious, and it’s only a few steps from seriousness to heaviness.

While excavating the Truth within, or even just navigating what’s real in a relationship, things can appear distorted and the process can feel incredibly destabilizing.  It continues to be priceless for me to get more comfortable being uncomfortable, to find the solid ground I’ve been looking for within myself, where no person or circumstance can take it away.  It’s a knowing.

All the things I listed above are activities that help me feel clear and awake so I can actively perceive the solid ground within. Find your own, experiment, and do something long enough to see results.  Then use the results to refine your experimentation.  And have some fun along the way.
